Alkaline water is a topic that triggers much opinion when it comes to its effects on health. Both layman and medical professionals seem to have their arguments on the health benefits of alkaline water. Among the various proponents, they do agree that acidity of the body is not good for health. The argument arises when promoters of alkaline water claim that it can render good effects and impact on one’s health.

Dr Robert Young, a best-selling author and naturopath, is an advocate of alkaline diet. His best-selling book, pH Miracle published in 2002, ushered in a whole series of pH Miracle books, such as The pH Miracle for Diabetes (Warner Books, 2004), The pH Miracle for Weight Loss (Warner Books, 2005), and “The pH Miracle Revised” (Grand Central Publishing, Hatchette Books, 2010). Dr Young says,

“If someone were to ask me, What is the one thing I can do to have better health? then the answer would be simple: Start drinking alkaline, ionized water.”Dr Robert Atkins | Alkaline Water

The late Dr Robert Atkins (1930~2003), the best-selling author of The Atkins Diet, was a medical doctor, cardiologist and also a complementary doctor. Dr Atkins said,

“The cells and fluids in most people’s bodies…are overly acidic. This can cause a lot of health problems. It prevents your body from neutralizing and disposing of harmful, poisonous toxins and leaves you more susceptible to the cell-damaging free radical oxidation that leads to cancer and other diseases.”

Dr. Hidemitsu Hayashi was graduated from the Medical School of Kobe University, Japan in 1968. He is a Cardiovascular Surgeon for more than 20 years. In 1985, after 2 decades of clinical experiences as a surgeon, he started doing advanced research on water. Dr. Hayashi’s research papers on Ionized Water remain to be the most quoted and referenced Ionized Water research papers on the Internet today. He said,

“Chlorinated tap water is polluted with non-biological chemicals and negative energy imprints. It is also devoid of bio-energy and so may be regarded as being badly polluted as well as ‘dead’. Alkaline living water is regarded by a growing number of health care professionals as the best water to drink and is listed as a medical device in Japan for the treatment of degenerative diseases.”

There you go, three reputable doctors of our times sharing their views on alkaline water. Whatever your view of alkaline water may be, it is important for us to understand the impact of alkaline water on our body. Not all of us have had personal experience of benefiting from this water which becomes so commercialized today that the truth may be muddled by the superfluous marketing jargon and exaggeration. Even then, we need to take a larger view of the entire picture. Are there people benefiting from the water? Many or a few? From isolated region or global? Answering these questions will help us see through the smoke screen of what is real and what is not real. AlkalineWaterMalaysia.com will continue to explore this exciting topic of alkaline water.

Alkaline Water – Let’s Get Acquainted With This Water

Alkaline water has generated a big industry and a laundry of machines known as ionizers which produce this water with a pH that is above neutral. Water with a pH greater than 7 is considered to be alkaline. The degree of ‘alkaline’ or rather alkalinity is indicated by a pH greater that 7, up to a maximum pH of 14, which is considered extremely alkaline.

Alkaline WaterIn chemistry, pure water is considered to be neutral at room temperature. Briefly, pH is a measure of the H(+) ions, known as hydronium ions, in the terminology of chemistry. A low pH means a higher concentration or amount of hydronium ions. A high pH means a lower concentration of the H(+) ions, which also means a higher concentration of OH(-) ions, known as hydroxide. Without being bogged down by the overly technicality of pH chemistry, it is suffice for us to be aware that alkaline water has more hydroxide ions than hydronium ions. These ions will determine the properties and behavior of alkaline water.

Alkaline Water – How Is It Produced?

Alkaline water can be produced through a process known as electrolysis. Water itself undergoes self-ionization, meaning splitting into H(+) and OH(-) ions. This self-ionization or autoionization process is slow and limited. Therefore, to enhance the process of ionization, external current is used to drive the process of electrolysis resulting in the significant ionization of water.

This process of electrolysis and ionization has given rise to a whole market of opportunity in coming with ionizers that produce alkaline water. Today, we see all sorts of brands in the market. It is not easy to know which is good and which is better, especially if one has no knowledge of alkaline water.

Properties of Alkaline Water

Other than the pH characteristics of alkaline water, we also need to understand other properties which bear significance as far as human usage is concerned. Promoters of this water always refer to the Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) of the water. This property can be easily measured using an ORP meter (picture on the right) which returns a reading in millivolts (mV), indicating the oxidation reduction potential of the water.ORP Meter A positive ORP means the water is more oxidized, while a negative ORP indicates less oxidation. Tap water normally records a reading of about 200 to 400 mV, meaning tap water is oxidized. When water is oxidized, it means the amount of oxygen available in the water is minimal or very low. Promoters of alkaline water often refer to such water as ‘dead’ water, meaning it will unlikely supply any oxygen to our body or our cell. We will discuss more on this topic in the future. For now, it suffices to remember that alkaline water should have an ORP of -200 mV (negative 200 mV) or lower.

Looking at low ORP from another angle gives us further insight into alkaline water. A low ORP also means a high anti-oxidation power. Promoters of alkaline water always refer to it being a powerful antioxidant for our body and health. Other terms used to describe such water include ‘live’ and ‘energy’ water. It is also important knowing that the ORP of water can change with time and environment. In other words, when you leave a cup of water exposed to air over hours or days, the ORP will rise as it becomes oxidized by the surrounding air. This is important to note even for the best quality alkaline water.

Benefits of Alkaline Water To Our Body & Health

Based on the properties of alkaline water, discussed above, promoters of alkaline water will emphasize the health benefits of the water. The major arguments against the health benefits of alkaline water boils down to the question of what actually happens inside the body. Many marketers or promoters will give a rather overly simple explanation or justification which many medical professionals find misleading. For instance, promoters will loudly claim that alkaline water ‘alkalizes’ the body pH or worse, alkaline water treats this disease and that disease. We need to look back and look at the situation more rationally.

On the one hand, medical professionals need clinical proof on how alkaline water actually ‘alkalizes’ or increases the pH of the body. On the other hand, the marketers and promoters have also seen so many lives were changed and even people with all kinds of conditions and illness improve or healed. Looking at the whole scenario and the whole industry of alkaline water, there is a constant ‘war’ or debate on the argument between the two extreme proponents. Certainly, this is not new and has been ongoing for as long as alkaline water has been on the market.

Nevertheless, it is important for us to have a good understanding of alkaline water as it is going to be with us for years and probably decades to come.
